Valheim: How to Build (& Sail) a Raft

Valheim How to Build (& Sail) a Raft

There many different ways to explore the world throughout Valheim. This guide shows players how to craft a Raft and how to sail the vehicle.

There are a great many things for players to do throughout Valheim. Players will spend a lot of the time trekking through dark and dangerous forests as they fight off monstrous beasts and collect numerous resources along their way. Players will also be able to build their very own personal base, go hunting for wild and exotic animals, and even craft numerous types of impressive weaponry.

One thing that many players may not realize they can do though is go sailing around the seas on their very own Raft. Players will first need to construct this vehicle on their own, and then determine how to actually pilot it. Once this has been down though they are free to sail wherever they wish on a completely new type of journey. This guide shows players how to craft a Raft and then how to sail it.

Valheim – How To Craft The Raft

The Raft is actually a surprisingly easy thing for players to build as long as they know what they are doing. All the player has to do is first find a large body of water that they need to cross and then use a hammer to construct a workbench near the water. This will allow the player to construct objects on the water itself.

Once this has been done the player will need to track down the different resources that are needed to construct the vehicle. They will first need twenty pieces of Wood, which can be acquired by cutting down trees or picking up branches. They will then need to find six Leather Scraps, which can only be gotten by hunting down and killing boars. The last thing that players need to construct the Raft is six Resin, which is only acquired by killing Greylings. After these resources have been acquired the player then just has to construct the Raft on the water to begin using it.

Players should also keep in mind that there are other options for water transportation that will become available later on in the game. At this time the player is able to construct two other vehicles: The Karve and The Longship. The Karve is faster and easier to operate than the Raft, and the player will also be able to store more items on it. The player can also eventually upgrade to a big Viking Longship, which is absolutely massive compared to the other two and moves at a much faster pace than either.

Valheim – How To Sail The Raft

Sadly, sailing a Raft in Valheim is nowhere near as easy as it is to craft one. When players hop on their Raft for the first time they will probably find themselves incredibly confused as to how this vehicle operates. The issue here though is that players will need to take into account the steering mechanics of the vehicle as well as the direction of the wind itself.

Players will be able to operate The Raft by grasping the rudder at the back of the boat. This allows the player to turn left or right, which is actually fairly simple. The player will also be able to control the Raft’s sail from this part of the boat as well. There are four different settings for the sails: up, rudder movement, half sail, and full sail. If the sail is completely up then the boat won’t move at all, but if the boat is at full sail then it will be able to move at full speed. The issue though that some players have found that even at full sail their Raft is moving dreadfully slow. Why is that?

This would be because they are trying to sail into the wind. The Raft is almost entirely powered by the wind, so in order to move at any speed at all the player will need the wind at their back to catch their sails. If the player wants to move in a certain direction with the sail they will need to keep an eye on the winds by using their compass, which will show them what direction the winds are blowing in at that time. If the wind is behind the player then they will get an indicator saying that they are able to use their sails in that direction.

If the player is unable to get the wind to behave while sailing they do have a few options at their disposal though. They can either sail using whatever direction the wind is going in to just make it close to the direction they want to go in rather than the exact direction. If they have no choice but to sail directly into the wind, though the player can always just use their rudder to move instead. At the lowest movement setting, they will be able to use their rudder to move very slowly. This isn’t ideal, but it is better than not moving at all.

Valheim – Why Should You Go Sailing?

There are many reasons to go sailing in Valheim, but without a doubt, one of the best reasons to do so is that it can severely cut down on a player’s travel time. There are many times throughout the game where the player will come across a large body of water right in the middle of the path they want to travel across. They could always try to travel around the water, but this could wind up being a several day-long trip that winds up costing the player their most precious resource: Time.  Using a Raft to travel across these bodies of water gives the player the ability to cut through these areas and avoid spending so much time traveling on their feet.

There are also a few different resources that can only be acquired while out on the water. One of the most important resources for players to discover in the game is Chitin, which is only able to found out on the ocean. Chitin can be used to craft two of the stronger weapons in the game, which will be incredibly useful against the game’s different bosses. Players will have to pilot their craft around the ocean until they come across a massive Kraken. Here they will be able to mine Chitin to bring back home to their base to use with their forge in order to craft both the Abyssal Harpoon and the Abyssal Razor. These weapons can be a game-changer to players of all skill levels and play styles.

RELATED

At this time there isn’t much else to explore out on the ocean other than a few islands and a couple of different enemy types to kill. Players must keep in mind though that Valheim is still in Early Access, so that is subject to change. Going forward there could be all manner of different things added to this biome for them to explore and discover. Keep in mind as well thought that these Raft mechanics could very well change going forward before this game manages to make it to a full release.

Valheim can be played on PC.
